We partner with your organization to design and facilitate a productive, engaging, and strategic off-site experience for board members. The process typically begins with pre-retreat planning, during which the we meet with key stakeholders—such as the executive director, board chair, or retreat committee—to clarify goals, assess board dynamics, and identify key issues or opportunities to address.
We then develop a tailored agenda aligned with the organization’s mission and strategic priorities. During the retreat, we facilitate sessions that may include:
-
Team Building
-
Strategic Panning
-
Governance Training,
-
Visioning Exercises
-
Action Planning
We ensure balanced participation, keep discussions focused and constructive, and use facilitation tools to surface insights and foster consensus.
After the retreat, we willl provide a written summary of outcomes, recommendations, and next steps to support follow-through and accountability. The goal is to strengthen board cohesion, clarify roles, align on priorities, and equip the board to lead more effectively.
Strategic Planning

We guide your board as they have a preliminary Strategic Planning session with some elements of a full strategic planning process such as:

-
We will review any previous plans and whether goals were accomplished or should be repeated.
-
We will examine what is needed in the following categories: Administration, Fundraising, and Programs, and determine which goals will take priority.
-
We will discuss growth and resilience strategies and attempt to come up with 4 to 6 overarching strategic imperatives (SMART goals)
Nonprofit Management Basics

This is not a "How to Start a Nonprofit" class. There are great classes for that. This is the What, Why, Who, How and When to help you to decide to start a nonprofit - or if you've already started a nonprofit (churches included), determining if you've asked yourself certain questions.
Here are a few of the questions we will review:
-
What do you hope to accomplish? What are your goals and objectives?
-
Who is your target population? Why do they need you?
-
Who works with you? Do you have a good board or team? Are you burnt out?
-
How are you going about it? Do you have a strategic plan?
-
When is a good time to start? If you started, do you have a calendar of activities?

Grant Management

SDNC offers assistance with allocating salaries and resources across a number of government and private foundation grants.
We recommend various tools and solutions to store data about your grants.
Post-award grants management can help you track, store, and report on grants data to determine management methods and ensure compliance and most of all financial cost monitoring.
Some government grants require procurement and contracting policies. We discuss creating systems to allocate salaries and plans to build capacity and infrastructure to manage grant requirements.
